In Lithuania and Poland, don't shake hands over the threshold

Lithuanian folklorists explain that this tradition stems from the fact that the threshold is seen as the dividing line between the world of the dead and that of the living – it is under the threshold that the spirits of one’s ancestors reside.

Others commonly claim that shaking hands over the threshold will bring bad luck, lead to an argument, or spoil the relationship between the people in question.
